What a treasure the new Pixar animation is!
At the weekend, my tribe had the privilege of seeing an early viewing (thanks, lovely friend!). Many animations are totally for the chilluns, but include enough nuances to hold adults' interest. This little gem is quite the opposite. I think it's Adult Psych 101, with enough jewel-like colours, sparkle and moving images to keep the chilluns there and attentive.
That said, there are really valuable take-aways for the more youthful. In fact, it is all set to become the way parents, children and young people conceptualise emotions and the roles they all usefully play in our lives. All feelings are shown to play useful roles, in their rightful place. I recommend it as a Must See for parents and families, since families can then have a shared vision to draw on and strengthen their communication.
For adults, there's much, much more to sink our teeth into. The role of core memories in shaping our personalities. The impact that trauma has on our core emotions. The long term impact of trauma on our identity. And lighter pseudo-insights to bring a chuckle: what does happen to all those facts we learnt at school, and why does that terrible TV jingle pop up at the worst times?
Though the movie is jewel-coloured, it is not light-weight. Anyone with trauma in their history may well find that the movie takes them into dark places. So, do please go with this understanding. Take tissues, and be ready to debrief the movie with a supportive person.
This little clip showcases who I see as the two stars. Without including any spoilers, I'll just say that Sadness won my heart.
Do get along to see this. I think it could become a cultural icon.
Have you seen it yet? How did you find it?
