Experiences

Going into the weekend, are you planning Retail Therapy, or Experiences?

This article throws interesting light on the long term impact that possessions and experiences each have on our identity.

For me, a couple of perspectives are not fully explored. For example, I'm not sure why unpaid experiences aren't discussed. I'm sure we can all see that our identities have been shaped by the positive, unpaid experiences we have chosen for ourselves, just as they are also shaped by the unchosen traumas we journey through. I also know that for many, a retail environment is not so much about the purchasing, but the pursuit. So, in that way, shopping might also be construed as experience.

Even so, I think the article reminds us of how the fabric of our being is the result of what we take into ourselves, and not the things that we surround ourselves with.

How will we choose to shape ourselves this weekend? Will we choose those things that will build and expand us?

Will we prioritise the pursuit of possessions, or the accumulation of experiences?
